Why Telegram Privacy Settings Matter

Telegram gives you far more control over your privacy than most messaging apps. But those controls only work if you know where to find them and what they do. This guide walks you through every key privacy setting so you can decide exactly who sees what about you.

Where to Find Your Privacy Settings

Open Telegram and go to Settings → Privacy and Security. This is your privacy control center. Let's break down each section.

Phone Number Visibility

By default, people who have your phone number saved can find your Telegram account. You can change who can see your number:

  • Everybody — Anyone can see your number (not recommended)
  • My Contacts — Only people in your contact list
  • Nobody — Your number is hidden from everyone

If you choose "Nobody," you can still add exceptions — for example, allowing specific contacts to see it.

Last Seen & Online Status

You can control who sees when you were last active on Telegram. Set this to My Contacts or Nobody if you prefer not to broadcast your activity. Note: if you hide your last seen, you won't be able to see other users' last seen times either.

Profile Photo and Bio

Similarly, you can restrict who sees your profile photo and bio. This is especially useful if you're in large public groups where strangers can view your profile.

Two-Step Verification (Essential)

Telegram accounts are linked to your phone number, which means anyone who can intercept your SMS could potentially access your account. Two-step verification adds a password layer on top of the SMS code. To enable it:

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification
  2. Set a strong password
  3. Add a recovery email address
  4. Store your password somewhere safe

This is one of the most important security steps you can take.

Active Sessions

Under Privacy and Security → Devices, you can see every device currently logged into your Telegram account. Review this list regularly and terminate any sessions you don't recognize.

Secret Chats vs. Regular Chats

Regular Telegram chats are stored on Telegram's servers (encrypted, but server-side). Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption and are stored only on the devices involved — not on Telegram's servers. Key differences:

FeatureRegular ChatSecret Chat
End-to-end encryptionNoYes
Available on multiple devicesYesNo (one device only)
Message forwardingYesNo
Self-destructing messagesOptionalOptional
Stored on Telegram serversYesNo

Blocking Unwanted Contacts

You can block any user from contacting you via their profile → Block User. Blocked users can't send you messages, see your last seen, or view profile updates. You can manage your block list under Privacy and Security → Blocked Users.

Data and Storage

Telegram lets you manage how much data the app stores locally on your device. Under Settings → Data and Storage, you can clear the cache, set storage limits, and manage which media types auto-download on mobile data versus Wi-Fi.

Taking 15 minutes to configure these settings properly can significantly improve both your privacy and your overall Telegram experience.
